The Galaxy Z Fold 8 NZ price starts at NZ$3,099 and runs to NZ$4,699 for the top Ultra, with the Z Flip 8 opening at NZ$2,299. That makes this the dearest foldable line-up Samsung has put in front of New Zealand buyers, and there are now three phones to pick between instead of two.

Pre-orders are open at Samsung NZ, PB Tech, JB Hi-Fi, Noel Leeming and Heathcote Appliances and every retailer is delivering the same price. So the real opportunities are in the pre-order bonuses, and the gap between the best and worst of them runs to well over a thousand dollars.

How much is the Galaxy Z Fold 8 in NZ?

Samsung has split the Fold in two, and the naming will catch people out. And of course they come in a variety of configurations with prices changing depending on what you want.

• The Z Fold8 Ultra is the continuation of last year's Z Fold7: an 8-inch main screen, 200MP camera, 5,000mAh battery.

• The Z Fold8 is the genuinely new device, a wider passport-shaped foldable with a 7.6-inch main screen and 5.5-inch cover screen at 201g.

• The Z Flip8 is the clamshell, down to 6.1mm and 180g.

Why is the Galaxy Z Fold 8 more expensive this year?

The simple answer is memory, and Samsung has been open about it. The AI-driven squeeze on DRAM and NAND supply is the same pressure pushing Apple's numbers up here as well, and analysts do not expect it to ease before 2027.

If your instinct is that this is the usual small-market New Zealand markup, it is not. This one is a global component problem landing on a local shelf, and every market copped it.

Two retailers are doing the heavy lifting, and they are doing it in completely different ways.

Every Z8 handset is listed at the same price with a choice of bonus. You either take a hardware bundle, or take the Your Choice Bundle, which is a straight PB eGift card.

JB's offer is bigger on paper and simpler in structure, but every dollar of it comes back as JB store credit rather than a discount at the till.

Samsung NZ: exclusive colours and stacked discounts

Samsung is the only source of the Pistachio Fold8, an online-exclusive colour.

Pre-orders get a NZ$150 trade-in bonus or a NZ$150 eVoucher against add-ons, NZ$100 off at checkout with Q Card, 10% off a Watch9 or Buds4 bought in the same transaction, and 30% off accessories.

All three phones include six months of Google AI Pro with 5TB of storage. The window closes at 10am on 14 August.

Which retailer has the best Galaxy Z Fold 8 deal in NZ?

It depends on one question: are you switching to 2degrees?

If yes, JB Hi-Fi wins outright. NZ$2,605 on either Fold is the biggest number in the market and nothing else is close. But you need to do it in-store, sign to the NZ$85 per month plan on 24 or 36 months interest free with 2Degrees, and hand over a Fold6 256GB to get that maximum. Which is a big ask.

If no PB Tech is the better pick for everyone else, particularly on the Flip8. The Perfect Sound Bundle hands you a pair of Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones which cost NZ$749. If you have any interest in flagship noise cancelling headphones, that is the single best swap in the range. On the Ultra, the AI Bundle's Rokid glasses carry a NZ$1,299 as well which isn't a bad option.

My picks: Flip8 buyers take PB's Perfect Sound Bundle, because headphones are useful to nearly everyone and the value gap is nearly two to one. Fold8 and Ultra buyers take the eGift card unless the scooter or the AR glasses genuinely appeal, since the Apex and Elite bundles are largely charging accessories most people already own versions of.

Whichever way you go, work out your trade-in properly first.

Should you buy the Z Flip 8, Z Fold 8 or Fold 8 Ultra?

Forget price for a moment. The first question is what shape of phone you actually want, because these three are not really competing for the same buyer.

The Z Flip8 at $2,299 is the clamshell, and it is the only one of the three that folds the way. The 6.9-inch phone collapses down to something that disappears into a jacket pocket or a small handbag, and if that is what you are after then nothing else in the range comes close. It is also the only Z8 that costs roughly what an ordinary flagship costs.

This year's changes are modest though. It's slimmer, lighter, has a reworked FlexWindow and Horizontal Lock added to the video stabilisation. Buy it because you want a small phone, not because you want the newest hardware.

The other two open like a book, and this is where Samsung has made a mess of the naming, because the Fold8 and the Fold8 Ultra are no longer the same shape as each other.

The Z Fold8 at $3,099 is the new one. It is wide rather than tall, closer to a passport, with a 10:16 cover screen for scrolling and a 4:3 main screen once you open it. Samsung has built it for watching, reading and gaming rather than spreadsheet-style multitasking, and at 201g it is the lightest Fold they have made. You get dual 50MP cameras, a 4,800mAh battery and 45W charging. Whether that shape suits the way you use a phone is not a thing a spec list can tell you, so go and hold one before you spend three grand on a form factor nobody has lived with yet.

The Z Fold8 Ultra at $3,499 is the successor to last year's Fold7. It's tall, has an 8-inch main screen, and a 6.5-inch cover screen you can use one-handed like a normal phone. It is also where the camera budget went. A 200MP main sensor, a 10MP telephoto with OIS that the standard Fold8 does not get at all, and a 5,000mAh battery.

So, the Fold8 against the Ultra comes down to two things. Do you want the telephoto lens, and do you want a tall or wide device? If you take photos a lot, or you want a foldable that stands in for a laptop with two apps side by side, the Ultra is what you're after. If you mostly consume rather than create on your phone, the Fold8 is the better buy and the more intriguing device.

On upgrading: if you are on a Fold7 or Flip7, sit this one out. The gains are incremental and the prices moved the wrong way. On a Fold6 or older, the trade-in credits and pre-order bonuses are doing enough work to make this a sensible time to jump.
